Friend bought me this DVD yesterday...

I've always been a fan of penguins; I think they're just awesome... but this gave me a new appreciation for them.

It's one of the most bittersweet movies I've ever seen. It's a tender film in some parts, and in others it's not... it's quite sad to see the penguins and their young accidentally freeze to death, be left behind in the long trek to the breeding ground, be overtaken and eaten by vicious leopard seals and giant predatory birds, and other tragedies. Very heartbreaking, actually... because if a chick dies, then the two parents no longer have a purpose in the trek... and they just kind of fade away. In one scene, a penguin mother deals with her agony and grief over her chick freezing to death by trying to steal another's baby. Both that mother and the rest of the group don't allow it... they fend off the grief-stricken mother.

It's also amazing to see how it's just sheer instinct that guides the animals on their journey. And then how the two parents show extraordinary cooperation and trust in caring for their egg for the longest time and then the chick in the brutal Antarctic temperatures.
